Di Octyl Terephthalate Field of application
plasticizer
plasticizer
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (CAS 6422-86-2), commonly abbreviated DEHT (dioctyl terephthalate) and better known in the market as DOTP, is a colorless, viscous liquid with a slight odor, insoluble in water and used for example to soften PVC plastics.
DOTP is an important phthalate-free plasticizer, an organic compound with the formula C6H4(CO2C8H17)2, being the diester of terephthalic acid and branched 2-ethylhexanol, commonly called octyl. A general purpose plasticizer that can be considered safer than orthophthalate plasticizers due to its reduced toxicity profile.
Di Octyl Terephthalate is known for its chemical similarity to general purpose phthalates such as DEHP (Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and DINP (Diisononyl phthalate), but without any negative regulatory burden.
DOTP has excellent plasticizing properties and can be used as a direct replacement for DEHP and DINP in many applications.
Di Octyl Terephthalate is used in various processes and products such as extrusion, the manufacture of wires and cables, plastic parts for cars, gaskets, coated fabrics, artificial leather and wall coverings.
DOTP is also used for finishing paper during the calendering process, for dip molding, rotational molding, slush molding and injection molding and for various ink applications, as well as for use in latex formulations for hair care products, among others.
Other examples of products where DOTP is used are bottle caps and closures, flexible films, PVC, toys, traffic cones, vinyl floors, vinyl gloves and, for example, vinyl water or aqua stoppers. In addition to use in the plastics industry, DOTP is also used in the paint and varnish industry.
