n-Butyl Acetate (CAS 123-86-4), or acetic acid butyl ester, is a clear, colorless solvent with a rather pleasant, fruity odor that occurs naturally in many fruits and is part of the apple flavor. It is the ester of acetic acid with 1-butanol.
n-Butyl Acetate is a widely used paint solvent. Among other things, this can be found as a substitute for the banned dichloromethane in paint strippers. It is also used as a solvent in the chemical laboratory.
n-Butyl Acetate dissolves very well in non-polar (organic) solvents, but it is very poorly soluble in water or polar solvents. n-butyl acetate is not very soluble in water, but dissolves well in ethanol, diethyl ether, propylene glycol and acetone.
n-butyl acetate is widely used as a solvent for cellulose nitrate, chlorinated rubber, chlorinated PVC, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylates and methacrylates, vinyl chloride copolymers, polystyrene, alkyd resins, natural resins, and oils and greases. Used in paints, coatings, printing inks, aerosol sprays and cosmetics. Used as a synthetic fruit flavoring agent in foods such as candy, ice cream, cheese, and baked goods. Used in the pharmaceutical and petroleum industries for extraction and as a processing solvent. Is an ingredient in detergents, flavors and fragrances. It is used as an analytical reagent for the verification of thalium, metallic tin and tungsten, as well as for the determination of molybdenum and rhenium.
Due to its strong solubilizing power, n-butyl acetate is also used as an ingredient in nail polish removers and thinners. It is also used in histological analysis, where it is used as an intermedium.
